Privacy

This page describes what actually happens, not what we would like to be able to say. Where something is collected, it is listed here even when it would read better omitted.

The short version

Your electricity usage never leaves your browser. Every price on this site is calculated on your own device. When you shape the usage bars, type a postcode, or import a meter file, none of it is sent to us and none of it is stored by us.

There is no account, no sign-up, no password, and no mailing list. We never ask you for your name, address, phone number or email in order to use the comparison.

What stays on your device

The site remembers your settings in your browser's local storage so you do not have to re-enter them: your usage profile, solar export profile, postcode, controlled-load setting, favourites, and any meter data you imported. This is on your device only. We cannot read it, it is not synced anywhere, and clearing your browser data removes it permanently.

Imported smart-meter files (NEM12 and the other supported formats) are read in the browser. The file is never uploaded.

What our servers do see

Being a website, some information reaches us simply because your browser asked for a page. We would be misleading you to claim otherwise.

• Our web server logs requests — the page requested, the time, your IP address, and your browser's user-agent string. This is ordinary server logging, used to keep the site running and to investigate faults.
• Cloudflare sits in front of the site to serve it quickly and absorb attacks. It processes requests on our behalf and keeps its own logs, including IP addresses. Cloudflare's own privacy terms apply to that processing.
• Plan searches reach our server as a postcode, because that is how we return the plans for your area. A postcode is not tied to you, and we do not build a profile from it.

Cookies and tracking

We set no cookies. There is no analytics on this site, no advertising or retargeting pixels, no fingerprinting, and no third-party tracking scripts of any kind. That is why you have never seen a cookie banner here.

If we add privacy-respecting, cookieless analytics in future — measuring page views without identifying anyone — this page will be updated in the same change that adds it, not afterwards.

What we never do

• Sell, rent or share your information. There is nothing collected to sell.
• Pass your details to a retailer. Following a link to a retailer takes you to their site, where their privacy policy applies; we send nothing with you but the fact that you arrived from here.
• Contact you. We have no way to.

Links to other sites

When you visit a retailer we may be paid for the referral — see our disclosure page. That link tells the retailer you came from this site. It carries no information about your usage, your searches, or you.

Your rights, and reaching us

Because we hold no personal information about you, there is generally nothing for us to correct or delete on request. If you believe we hold something about you, or you want to raise a privacy concern, email [email protected] and we will respond within a reasonable time. If you are not satisfied, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).

Changes

If this policy changes, the change ships with the change it describes. We will not quietly broaden what we collect and update the wording later.
